GYPSUM CONSTRUCTION ZONES
GYPSUM, CO - Eagle County Sheriff's deputies are strictly enforcing the reduced speed limit on a stretch of Cooley Mesa Road that is under construction this summer, costing violators between $126 and $250.
The construction zone stretches from Spring Creek Road to Navajo Road, in front of the Eagle County Regional Airport. The speed through this construction zone has been reduced from 45 miles per hour (mph) to 25 mph.
Speeding 10-19 mph over the speed limit will warrant a fine of $250, after being doubled for occurring in a construction zone. A fine of $126 will be issued for speeding 5-9 mph over the speed limit through the construction zone. Speeding 20 mph or more is an automatic summons to court.
The 25 mph speed zone is being enforced 24 hours of the day for the remainder of the construction period, which is expected to last through the month of August.
Travelers should also be aware of road work taking place on Highway 6 between the town of Eagle and Cooley Mesa Road, where B & B Excavating is currently widening the road. The speed limit through the zone is reduced from 55 mph to 40 mph while work is being done, from 9-4:30p.m. Beginning next Monday, May 19, the highway will be reduced to one lane. Construction is expected to last approximately four more weeks.
Travelers are encouraged to take alternate routes to avoid both work areas, especially during high traffic times such as before and after work. Those who must drive through the construction zones should schedule enough time to drive safely through the work area and expect delays during busy traffic times, like before and after work.
Travelers to the airport are encouraged to exit Interstate 70 at Gypsum (Exit 140) and take Highway 6 southeast to Valley Road. From Valley Road, travelers can access Cooley Mesa and avoid most of the construction zone.
